Atmospheric Reflections of the North

A Sculpture of Transition

Atmospheric Reflections of the North explores ideas of movement, memory, transformation and place.

Suspended within a space defined by departure and arrival, the installation occupies a threshold. A place between destinations. A place where journeys begin, end and intersect. Moments of anticipation, uncertainty, reunion and reflection coexist within a constantly shifting flow of people moving through space.

The work responds to this condition of transition.

Composed of hundreds of suspended forms containing elements from Manchester Airport's original chandeliers, the installation disperses a familiar object into an atmospheric landscape. Rather than preserving the chandeliers as singular artefacts, their material is redistributed throughout the space, allowing fragments of the past to become part of a new collective experience.

The installation draws upon the visual language of clouds, rainfall and drifting weather systems. Forms appear suspended between descent and flight, creating a dialogue between gravity and weightlessness, permanence and impermanence. References to parachutes connect the work to the history of Ringway and the training of the Parachute Regiment, while simultaneously evoking notions of travel, movement and safe passage.

Weather serves as both material and metaphor.

The skies of the North have long shaped the character of the landscape and those who inhabit it. Shifting cloud cover, rain, changing light and atmospheric conditions become part of a shared cultural memory. These familiar phenomena are translated into sculptural form, creating an environment that mirrors the rhythms and unpredictability of the natural world.

Throughout the installation, colour moves gradually from darker tones towards increasing warmth and luminosity. The transition reflects the emotional and physical experience of travel itself; a movement from one state to another, from departure towards possibility.

At its core, the work considers transformation.

Objects accumulate histories. Places gather memories. Meanings evolve through time. Materials once associated with a singular decorative form are dispersed and reimagined, carrying traces of their past while participating in something entirely new.

Individual glass droplets become part of a larger constellation.

Personal journeys become part of a collective narrative.

Memory becomes atmosphere.

Atmospheric Reflections of the North exists between object and environment, heritage and future, stillness and movement. It invites viewers to reflect on the spaces we pass through, the stories we carry with us and the countless journeys that continually shape our understanding of place.
