Standing at the Centre

Centre of Possibility explores the relationship between human potential, chance and participation.

Drawing upon the symbolic geometry of the circle and square, the work considers what it means to occupy a position of possibility. It is concerned with beginnings; those fleeting moments before a decision is made, a journey starts or a future takes shape.

At the heart of the installation stands the participant.

Entering the work, visitors find themselves positioned within a geometric framework that references both the centre circle of a football pitch and the enduring symbolism of Leonardo da Vinci's Vitruvian Man. For centuries, the circle and square have represented the relationship between humanity and the wider systems that shape our existence; between the individual and the collective, the physical and the conceptual, the known and the unknown.

The installation invites people to inhabit this space rather than simply observe it.

By stepping into the centre, the participant becomes both subject and catalyst. The work shifts from object to experience, existing only when activated through human presence.

A ceremonial coin toss forms the central interaction.

Simple and universally understood, the act represents a moment suspended between multiple futures. Before the coin lands, every outcome remains possible. It is an event defined by uncertainty, yet filled with anticipation. The gesture echoes rituals found throughout sport, while also reflecting broader experiences of chance, decision-making and opportunity that shape everyday life.

Throughout history, circles have functioned as places of gathering, exchange and ceremony. Whether around a campfire, within an arena or on a playing field, they create a shared space where individuals come together around a common experience. Centre of Possibility draws upon this tradition, creating a contemporary environment in which participation becomes the work itself.

The installation also considers the role of belief.

Not belief in a religious sense, but belief in potential. The optimism that exists before an outcome is known. The willingness to embrace uncertainty and step forward regardless.

Constructed from materials embedded with their own cultural histories, the work transforms familiar objects into a new symbolic framework. Materials associated with competition, aspiration and collective memory are reimagined as elements of a participatory sculpture that places the visitor at its core.

Centre of Possibility proposes the centre not as a destination, but as a beginning.

A place where possibility remains open.

A moment before the future reveals itself.

A space in which every outcome is still waiting to be imagined.
